Search for a free CISSP practice test and you will find hundreds. Almost all of them share the same four weaknesses.

They are written from an engineer's perspective. This is the decisive difference. CISSP asks what a security leader should do, which is frequently to assess risk, consult policy or escalate rather than to implement the most advanced technical control. Practice material written by engineers for engineers trains the wrong instinct.

They cover only the technical domains. Security and Risk Management carries 16 percent, the heaviest domain, and covers governance, due care and due diligence, risk treatment, quantitative analysis and professional ethics. Free material skews heavily toward network and architecture content.

They ignore the adaptive format. The live exam is computerised adaptive testing, meaning question difficulty adjusts to your performance. There is no going back to change an answer. Practice material that allows review does not build the commit and move on discipline the real exam requires.

They give you a letter, not a reason. CISSP distractors are frequently defensible actions that are simply not the best first step. Understanding the ordering of correct actions is precisely what the exam measures.

Every question is tagged by domain and by topic. That tagging is what makes the personalised score report possible, and it is the single feature that separates this from every other free CISSP test available online.

Security and Risk Management carries 16 percent, making it the heaviest domain, and it is also the one technically minded candidates most often neglect because it is the least technical.

A practice test used badly produces false confidence, which is worse than no practice test at all. Four rules.

• Take it under real conditions. Block the full 180 minutes. No notes, no phone, no interruptions. The discomfort is the point, because the real exam will be uncomfortable too.
• Do not check answers as you go. This is the main reason the answer key is not published alongside the download. Complete all 150 questions first, then submit.
• Read every explanation when the key arrives, including for questions you got right. Some of your correct answers reflected genuine knowledge and some were a lucky choice between two plausible options. Only the explanation tells you which.
• Retake it after two to three weeks of targeted study. The change in your domain scores between attempt one and attempt two is the clearest readiness signal you will get anywhere.

• Security professionals meeting the five year experience requirement who want a readiness check.
• Technically strong candidates who suspect their managerial and governance knowledge is the weaker half.
• Candidates who have failed a previous attempt and need to identify which domains cost them the pass.
