PRINCE2 7 Foundation and Practitioner: exams and what each level proves

PRINCE2 is owned by PeopleCert (AXELOS). The combined course prepares you for two separate exams. Foundation confirms you understand the seven principles, seven practices, seven processes and the people element of PRINCE2 7. Practitioner confirms you can apply and tailor the method to a realistic project scenario.

Foundation is a 60-question, 60-minute closed-book exam with a pass mark of 36 (60%). Practitioner is a 70-question, 150-minute objective test with a pass mark of 42 (60%), sat open book with the official PRINCE2 manual. Foundation, or another recognised prerequisite, is required before Practitioner.

Check prerequisite options on the PeopleCert Practitioner page. Foundation is not the only accepted qualifying credential. Covered certifications renew every three years under current PeopleCert renewal guidance; confirm the exam or CPD route appropriate to your certification. Check the Foundation product page for current candidate rules.

  • 32 contact hours over four training days
  • Foundation: 60 questions, 60 minutes, pass 36
  • Practitioner: 70 questions, 150 minutes, pass 42, open book
  • Seven principles, seven practices, seven processes, people focus
  • Course completion certificate with PDUs for PMI holders

What is included in the Live Online course

The combined course covers 32 contact hours over four days with an accredited trainer, official-style practice papers, scenario workshops and support for both the Foundation and Practitioner exams.

Sessions run live on a video platform with screen sharing, whiteboards and breakout rooms. You need a stable connection, a camera and microphone, and a quiet space for each session.

Before paying, check the cohort page for the exact package, exam voucher inclusion, timetable and rescheduling terms.

PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner career context across Australia and New Zealand

Australia: Federal and state government, defence, infrastructure, mining and financial services commonly reference PRINCE2 in project and PMO roles alongside agile methods.

New Zealand: Public-service improvements, infrastructure and digital services use proportionate governance, acceptance decisions and operational handover. PRINCE2 is familiar across New Zealand government agencies.

Growth prospects depend on your experience, sector and the role you target; certification strengthens a profile but does not guarantee a job, promotion or a specific salary.

PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner Live Online pages by city

Live Online cohorts are open to learners anywhere in the region. City pages show local currency, local cohort times and the Book Your Seat button.

Timing, time zones and practical logistics

Australia spans AWST, ACST and AEST (with daylight saving in some states), and New Zealand runs on NZST/NZDT. Australian fees are in AUD and New Zealand fees in NZD. Check session times in your own state.

Join from home or the office. Mute notifications, block the full session in your calendar and let colleagues know you are training.

Live Online versus Classroom: which should you choose?

Both formats use the same accredited curriculum and prepare you for the same PeopleCert exams. The best choice depends on your schedule, budget and learning style.

Foundation knowledge and Practitioner judgement are different goals

For a Australia and New Zealand learner, the combined PRINCE2 route should have two distinct learning objectives. Foundation establishes the method's vocabulary and structure. Practitioner asks how that method should be applied in a particular situation. Recognising a term is therefore not the same as choosing an appropriate management action. Start with accurate definitions, then test whether you can explain the purpose of a decision, the role responsible and the evidence needed.

A newcomer can use a small project example throughout the course, such as introducing a customer portal or improving an internal process. An experienced manager can compare the method with existing governance without assuming familiar practice is automatically correct. In both cases, separate examination requirements from your employer's chosen implementation. Certification is awarded by PeopleCert after the applicable requirements are met, not simply after attendance.

Continued business justification: decide whether the work remains worthwhile

A business case is not a document written solely to unlock initial funding. It should support ongoing decisions about whether a project remains desirable, viable and achievable. Suppose implementation costs increase or expected demand falls. Revisit the justification using current evidence rather than defending the original approval at all costs. A decision to change, pause or stop a project can be responsible governance when its rationale has weakened.

For a Australia and New Zealand practice scenario, describe a service improvement with an expected operational benefit. Identify who provides cost information, who owns the benefit and who has the authority to continue investment. Distinguish a delivered product from the eventual benefit. Do not invent a financial return to make the example sound attractive. Explain what information a project board would need to judge the next stage.

Defined roles: make authority visible before a problem occurs

A project works better when people understand who decides, who delivers and who accepts. The PRINCE2 role structure distinguishes business, user and supplier interests while allowing proportionate tailoring. A small project may combine responsibilities where appropriate, but combining roles should not remove necessary accountability or create unmanaged conflicts of interest. Titles in an organisation do not automatically map to every project responsibility.

Draw a responsibility map for a familiar project. Mark the sponsor, user representative, supplier representative, project manager and team responsibilities, then identify gaps. Who can approve additional spending? Who confirms that output meets user needs? Who challenges an optimistic progress report? Use this map when reviewing Practitioner questions. An otherwise sensible action can be wrong if it assigns a decision to the wrong authority.

Manage by stages: commit with enough information

Stages create opportunities to review performance and make informed commitments. They should reflect the project's uncertainty, decision points and control needs, rather than a mechanical division into equal calendar periods. A discovery stage might establish requirements and feasibility before a larger investment. A later stage might deliver a product group and assess operational readiness. The board needs evidence appropriate to the commitment it is being asked to make.

Prepare a stage-boundary exercise with an updated business case, progress information, unresolved risks and a proposal for the next stage. Explain what remains uncertain and what assumptions the next plan depends on. Stage approval is not a guarantee that every task will proceed unchanged. The purpose is to control commitment while providing the project manager with clear authority to manage the agreed work.

Manage by exception: tolerances are delegated authority

Tolerances tell a manager what can be handled without seeking a higher-level decision. They are not permission to ignore a problem until the final deadline. Monitor forecasts and escalate when the agreed limits are expected to be exceeded. A project can be currently on budget but forecast to exceed cost tolerance. A late warning reduces the board's options and undermines the purpose of exception management.

In a Australia and New Zealand scenario, imagine a supplier delay that threatens an agreed stage completion date. Identify the tolerance, the forecast breach and the decision needed. Separate reporting a concern from authorising a revised plan. Practise reasoning across time, cost, scope, quality, risk, benefits and sustainability considerations where applicable to the current method. Verify exact examination terminology against your official learning materials.

Product focus: agree the result before planning the activity

Product-based thinking begins with what must be delivered and what makes it acceptable. A task such as develop a dashboard is too vague without users, required information, quality criteria and acceptance responsibilities. Clear product descriptions reduce disagreements between a business team and a supplier. They also improve planning because dependencies, review activities and resource needs become easier to identify.

Write a product description for one output in your example project. Include its purpose, composition, quality criteria, verification method and responsible reviewers. Then ask whether two people could use it to reach a consistent acceptance decision. If not, make the criteria clearer. The exercise is valuable for Practitioner preparation because many scenarios turn on incomplete definitions, unclear quality responsibilities or a mistaken assumption about acceptance.

Plans and work packages: connect delegation to control

A plan should explain how agreed products will be created within the available constraints. A work package then makes delegated delivery clear: what is required, the constraints, reporting arrangements and acceptance expectations. Delegation does not mean the project manager loses visibility. Equally, detailed control should not turn into constant interference with specialist work that a team is authorised to manage.

Compare a work package for an internal team with one for an external supplier. Consider interfaces, information security, dependencies and escalation arrangements. Ask how the team will report progress and how completed products will be checked. In examination practice, trace whether the scenario requires a team-level action, project-manager control or a board decision. Keeping these levels distinct makes longer scenario questions easier to interpret.

Risk practice: assign action, not just a rating

A risk register supports decisions only if entries lead to ownership and action. Record what may happen, why it may happen and what it could affect. Assess the uncertainty, choose a response and define the trigger for review. A risk owner needs the ability to coordinate the response; a response action may be carried out by someone else. Avoid treating the register as a static compliance attachment.

A useful Australia and New Zealand case is a project depending on access to an operational site or a specialist supplier. Consider an early action that could reduce uncertainty and a contingency if access is delayed. Check whether the response creates another risk or changes the business case. Practitioner questions often ask you to judge whether a proposed action fits the scenario rather than simply name a response type.

Issues and change: understand what has been requested

An issue can require clarification, a change decision or action on a failure to meet expectations. Begin by understanding what has happened and its effect on approved products and plans. Do not approve a requested enhancement solely because a stakeholder is influential. Equally, do not reject every request because the original scope was agreed. Use the appropriate authority and evaluate the effects on justification and delivery.

Practise a scenario in which a user asks for an additional feature while a supplier reports an omitted requirement. Compare the information needed for each decision. Identify who should assess impact and who can authorise a response. Maintain traceability between the issue, the decision and the updated product or plan. This prevents a familiar workplace shortcut from becoming an incorrect Practitioner answer.

Progress reporting: communicate a forecast, not just completed tasks

A report listing activities completed last week can still fail to answer whether a project remains under control. Summarise progress against agreed plans, relevant risks and issues, and the forecast for remaining work. Make exceptions and decisions visible. The audience should be able to distinguish normal delegated management from a situation requiring higher-level direction. An optimistic narrative is not a substitute for evidence.

Draft a brief highlight report for your example project and a separate team checkpoint update. Explain why their audiences and detail differ. Include one forecast concern and state whether it falls within tolerance. In revision, pay attention to where a report belongs in the process model and what it enables. Document names become easier to remember when you connect each to a real decision.

People in PRINCE2 7: relationships support the method

Formal roles and documents do not remove the need for leadership, communication and stakeholder engagement. People may resist a change because it affects workload, status or confidence. A project team needs to understand these concerns and collaborate with those who will use or operate its output. The people element should be considered throughout delivery, not appended as a communication exercise after technical work is complete.

For a Australia and New Zealand service-change example, map the groups affected, their likely concerns and the ways they can contribute. Distinguish consultation from decision authority. Plan feedback so that issues surface early enough to influence the work. In Practitioner reasoning, assess whether proposed engagement is proportionate and suitable for the scenario, rather than assuming the largest number of meetings produces the best outcome.

Tailoring: simplify responsibly without deleting accountability

Tailoring adapts the method to scale, complexity, uncertainty and organisational context. A small internal improvement should not inherit every reporting burden of a major infrastructure programme. However, fewer documents do not mean no business justification, quality definition or decision ownership. Combine information where appropriate and keep the purpose of each control clear. The method is useful when it supports decisions, not when paperwork becomes the objective.

Create a comparison between a short internal project and a multi-supplier programme component. Explain how reporting frequency, role assignments, stages and information records might differ. Give a reason for each adaptation. Practitioner questions may present a proposed tailoring decision; judge whether it preserves the relevant principle and control need. Do not assume a change is justified merely because it saves administration.

PRINCE2 and agile teamwork can address different needs

PRINCE2 provides a project governance method, while agile practices may help teams develop and validate products iteratively. They need not be treated as mutually exclusive choices. A board can require continued justification, agreed tolerances and stage decisions while a delivery team uses short feedback cycles. The interfaces must be explicit so that backlog changes, quality criteria and governance commitments do not conflict.

This guide concerns PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner, not a claim that purchasing it automatically awards PRINCE2 Agile certification. Compare the actual credential, syllabus and prerequisites before choosing a different course. If your organisation already uses agile teams, ask how the training examples handle governance and product delivery. The most useful discussion is about responsibilities and control needs rather than framework labels.

Practitioner preparation: navigate the permitted official material

Open book does not mean there is enough time to learn the method during the exam. Know where key explanations sit in the permitted official material and practise finding them while applying scenario information. Check PeopleCert's current rules on permitted editions, annotations and examination arrangements directly. Do not assume every note, digital document or unofficial summary can be used simply because a trainer has recommended it for revision.

When practising, first identify the topic and relevant scenario facts, then consult the material if necessary. Avoid spending several minutes searching for one difficult answer while losing time for the rest of the paper. Review why distractors are less suitable and how the scenario changes a general rule. Speed improves with familiarity and reasoning, not only with adding more tabs or highlighting more pages.

After Practitioner: use the method on one real decision

Select a manageable improvement after training: clearer product acceptance, a useful stage review or a more actionable exception report. Discuss it with your manager and colleagues before introducing new forms. Demonstrate how it improves a decision or reduces ambiguity. Keep examples of your contribution without retaining confidential employer documents in a personal portfolio. A concrete improvement is stronger evidence than a claim that every project now follows the method.

Review current PeopleCert renewal requirements and the options that apply to your credential. Keep development records as you go rather than trying to reconstruct them at renewal time. Certification alone does not guarantee a project-management job or a promotion. Combine the method with sector knowledge, practical delivery responsibility and communication skills that match the role you want to pursue.

Prepare a workable Live Virtual Class environment

For PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner Instructor-Led Live Online Training in Australia and New Zealand, protect the scheduled session as if you were attending a venue. Test your connection, audio and access to the class platform before the first session. Use a quiet place where you can participate, not simply listen while doing unrelated work. If you share space with family or colleagues, agree the session boundaries in advance and arrange a backup connection where practical.

Check the session time against your actual location and the date of the class. Daylight-saving transitions can change the relationship between two countries even when both ordinarily use familiar time zones. Add the whole session and short revision periods to your calendar. If attendance may be disrupted, ask about the published catch-up and rescheduling arrangements rather than assuming a recording replaces participation or attendance requirements.

Choose the right cohort using a total-cost checklist

The listed PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner training fee is one part of your decision. Check the buyer country, currency, delivery mode, early bird deadline and exact package. Identify whether examination vouchers, official materials and any taxes are explicitly included. This guide does not turn a training-only package into an exam-inclusive offer. The selected course page and checkout should provide the transaction details you need before paying.

Compare the published Live Online amount with the whole-unit HOLIDAYS15 payment while the promotion is active. Do not add another promotion on top: only one code applies per order. Allow for study time, internet access and any separately payable awarding-body charges. A lower fee is useful only if the timetable and package suit your circumstances. If a point is unclear, use Enquire Now before purchasing.

Use the study slider as a planning estimate, not a pass prediction

The calculator helps you compare a training budget and distribute an assumed revision workload over the hours you can realistically protect each week. It is not an assessment of eligibility, readiness or pass probability. Two learners with the same available hours may have different experience, language familiarity and weak areas. Change the assumption when work, caring responsibilities or a difficult topic require a different plan.

For Australia and New Zealand, select the correct country before comparing fees and choose early bird or standard according to the cohort deadline. Increase the learner count for an initial team estimate, but do not treat simple multiplication as a negotiated group quote. The study-time estimate excludes the scheduled course itself. Review progress after practice sessions and adjust the plan based on what you can explain and apply, not only on elapsed weeks.

Employer sponsorship: make the request specific and measurable

An employer request for PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner training is stronger when it identifies the work you will improve. Describe a current delivery challenge, the skills you need and the cohort that fits your schedule. Include the training fee, any separate examination cost and the working time involved. Explain what you will share with colleagues afterwards, such as a short workshop, a revised risk review or a clearer acceptance checklist.

Avoid promising a salary increase or an automatic return on investment. Instead, agree a practical follow-up with your manager and identify evidence that could show improvement. For a group, record participant experience and learning objectives before requesting a quotation. Different levels of experience may need different preparation even if the team attends the same course. Use the enquiry action for an organisation-specific discussion and confirm invoicing requirements before booking.

Interview preparation: explain a decision and its consequence

A hiring conversation in Australia and New Zealand may ask how you handled a difficult delivery situation rather than how many definitions you remember. Prepare examples with context, responsibility, action and result. State your actual contribution and distinguish team achievements from personal ownership. If you would now make a different decision after training, explain the lesson without disclosing sensitive project information or unfairly attributing blame.

Use PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner concepts to make your reasoning clearer, not to replace the story with jargon. A useful example might explain why you escalated a forecast, how you negotiated acceptance criteria or how feedback changed a delivery plan. Check actual vacancies for your target sector and seniority. Certification can support a profile, but experience, professional communication and local employment requirements remain important and no role outcome is guaranteed.
