SOC Analyst Career Path in 2026: From Tier 1 to Detection Engineer

Modern SOCs organise into five roles: Tier 1 analyst (alert triage and enrichment), Tier 2 analyst (investigation, containment, IR coordination), Tier 3 analyst or senior IR (advanced adversary handling, forensics), detection engineer (writes and tunes SIEM and EDR detections) and SOC lead (runs shift, metrics and platform strategy). • Threat hunter: hypothesis driven hunting, threat intel consumption, data science basics, deep protocol knowledge.

Month 1 to 3: Security+ and a home SIEM lab with free Splunk or Sentinel trial. Month 4 to 6: apply for Tier 1 roles, take at least 3 open source detections public on GitHub. Month 7 to 12: land Tier 1, ship 20 tuned detections, get CySA+ paid by employer. Month 13 to 18: move to Tier 2, add GCIH via employer training budget, lead 5 medium incidents. Month 19 to 24: specialise into detection engineering or threat hunting based on which work energises you most.
