CEH vs OSCP in 2026: Which Offensive Security Credential Actually Gets You Hired

CEH covers 20 modules across reconnaissance, scanning, enumeration, system hacking, malware, sniffing, social engineering, DoS, session hijacking, web servers, web apps, SQL injection, wireless, mobile, IoT, cloud and cryptography. The main exam is 125 multiple choice questions over 4 hours. The optional CEH Practical adds a 6 hour hands on exam in a virtual lab. Passing CEH plus CEH Practical earns the CEH Master designation.

OSCP requires you to compromise machines in a 24 hour lab exam. Typically 3 independent standalone machines plus an Active Directory set of 3 chained machines. You need 70 out of 100 points, then submit a professional penetration test report within 24 more hours. There are no multiple choice questions. Every point is earned by root or system access, screenshots and proof.txt files.

CEH is respected by HR filters, DoD contracts (8570 baseline for CSSP roles) and enterprise security compliance functions. It is often the checkbox credential that gets your CV past the first screen for security analyst, SOC analyst and junior penetration tester roles.

OSCP is respected by hiring managers themselves. In red team, penetration testing and application security recruiter surveys, OSCP is the single most valued credential in 2026, ahead of CREST CRT, GPEN and GXPN. Holding OSCP typically skips the initial technical screen and lands you directly in the interview loop.

Take CEH first if you are a SOC analyst, security analyst, incident responder or compliance lead who needs the credential for a DoD contract, government tender or HR filter. CEH does not make you a penetration tester, it demonstrates familiarity with offensive security concepts.

Take OSCP first (or only) if you want to work as a penetration tester, red teamer or application security engineer. OSCP prep IS the training - the PEN-200 lab is a genuine penetration test learning environment. Passing OSCP means you can pentest a small network end to end, which is exactly what hiring managers want to see.

If you have budget and time for both, do CEH in month 1 to 3 (fast win, HR checkbox) and OSCP in month 4 to 9 (real skill, hiring manager credibility). This is the most common path for mid market security engineers moving into pentesting.

Do not attempt OSCP without at least 60 lab machines rooted in the PEN-200 environment, plus 20 to 30 Hack The Box machines outside the lab. Under prepared candidates burn USD 250 on retake fees. Do not treat CEH as evidence of pentest ability - it is not, and interviewers will see through it in the first technical question. Do not chain multiple entry level certs (CEH plus CompTIA PenTest+ plus eJPT) instead of one hands on credential, three theory certs do not equal one OSCP.
