CEH v13 Exam Guide 2026: Format, Prep and Candid Career Value

20 modules across reconnaissance, scanning, enumeration, vulnerability analysis, system hacking, malware, sniffing, social engineering, denial of service, session hijacking, web application attacks, SQL injection, wireless, mobile, IoT, cloud, cryptography and the new AI focused module on adversarial machine learning and prompt attacks. The 2024 v13 refresh added prompt injection, model theft, and LLM misuse cases which are now real interview topics for SOC roles in 2026.

Depth is a mile wide, an inch deep. You will recognise tools (nmap, Metasploit, Burp Suite, Wireshark, Hydra) but not necessarily deploy them under attack conditions. That is why the optional Practical exam matters if you want the credential to mean something operationally.

Weeks 1 to 4: read the official courseware end to end. Watch a video series for pacing (Cybrary, INE, or the EC Council iLearn track). Set up a home lab with a Kali VM and 2 or 3 vulnerable targets (Metasploitable 3, DVWA, HackTheBox starting point machines).

Weeks 5 to 8: work through iLabs or an equivalent hands on lab. This is not optional if you plan to sit CEH Practical.

Weeks 9 to 12: 4 full length practice exams (Boson ExSim CEH is the closest calibration in 2026). Review every wrong answer, note the module weight, revisit weak modules.

Weeks 13 to 14: exam week reduction, one final practice test, sit the exam.

CEH opens doors at large enterprises, MSPs, government and defence contractors where procurement rules or HR filters require a named certification. Salary bump in India is 15 to 22 percent and in the US 10 to 15 percent within 12 months for SOC analyst and junior pen test roles. It does not substitute for OSCP if you want to work as a professional pen tester; senior offensive security teams treat OSCP (and increasingly Offensive Security's newer certs) as the real skill signal. Use CEH to enter, plan OSCP within 18 months to advance.

A last candid note. CEH is easy to underestimate because it is multiple choice and the pass mark is not published. Candidates who fail typically fail because they treated it as trivia and skipped the hands on labs. The exam increasingly asks scenario questions that assume you have used the tools, not merely read about them. Budget lab time even if you do not plan to sit the Practical exam; the knowledge exam benefits enormously from it. A modest home lab (three VMs, Kali, a Windows target, a Linux target) is enough to change how you read the questions.

The bigger point across all of this: the certification, the tool and the method are only ever the ticket. What sustains a career is the daily habit of applying what you learned, sharing the reasoning with colleagues, and quietly building a portfolio of small wins that a future interviewer can point to and believe. Aim for one deliberate practice moment per week, log it in a shared document, and revisit the log every quarter. In twelve months you will have both the credential and the story to explain what it actually changed about how you work.
