ITIL 5 vs ITIL 4: What Changed and Why It Matters in 2026

Most of ITIL 4 remains untouched in ITIL 5. The Service Value System, the four dimensions of service management (organisations and people, information and technology, partners and suppliers, value streams and processes), the seven Guiding Principles and the structure of the certification stack are all preserved.

If you have spent the last few years implementing ITIL 4 inside ServiceNow, BMC Remedy or Jira Service Management, almost none of that work is invalidated. The new content layers on top of existing implementations rather than replacing them.

First, AI Ops is now first class guidance, not an appendix. PeopleCert has integrated explicit recommendations on using machine learning for incident detection (correlating signals across noisy monitoring), problem analysis (clustering recurring incidents to surface root causes faster) and change risk scoring (predicting probability of failure for proposed changes based on historical data).

Second, sustainability practices are now embedded across the 34 practices. Carbon accounting for compute, decommissioning protocols for legacy hardware, vendor selection criteria that weight environmental impact and energy efficiency targets in service design are all explicit in ITIL 5. This reflects regulatory pressure in the EU and UK, plus voluntary ESG commitments at most large enterprises.

Third, cyber resilience is elevated from a sub topic of Information Security Management to a cross cutting concern that every practice references. Change Enablement now requires explicit cyber risk assessment, Service Continuity Management absorbs ransomware recovery scenarios, and Supplier Management has new criteria for vendor cyber posture.

Change Control is renamed Change Enablement, signalling a philosophical shift towards enabling safe change rather than blocking risky change. Service Desk now explicitly covers conversational AI assistants and the right division of work between bot and human. Monitoring and Event Management absorbs significant content on observability platforms (Datadog, New Relic, Dynatrace style) that did not exist when ITIL 4 was finalised.

Continual Improvement now references AI driven improvement ideas and the role of generative AI in writing post incident reviews. IT Asset Management has new sustainability driven content on circular economy, refurbishment and end of life disposal.

PeopleCert has been thoughtful about not stranding existing credential holders. ITIL 4 Foundation holders can take a single 90 minute Foundation Transition exam to gain ITIL 5 Foundation. The exam costs USD 285 and focuses entirely on the new content.

Higher credential holders have similar bridge modules. ITIL 4 Managing Professional holders can take a 2 hour MP Transition exam. ITIL 4 Strategic Leader holders can take a 2 hour SL Transition exam. Holders of all four MP modules plus both SL modules under ITIL 4 are automatically eligible to apply for ITIL 5 Master.

Transition now if you work in a forward leaning enterprise where AI Ops, sustainability or cyber resilience are board level concerns. The credential upgrade signals to hiring managers and procurement teams that your knowledge is current. Cost is modest and time investment is 4 to 6 weeks.

You can wait 12 to 18 months if your organisation is still maturing on ITIL 4 basics and the upgrade would be cosmetic. ITIL 4 credentials remain valid and accepted in 2026. There is no penalty for staying current with ITIL 4 while you build core practice strength.
