ITIL 4 vs ITIL v3 Migration Guide 2026: What Transferred, What Didn't and How to Update Your Credentials

ITIL v3 was built around 26 processes organised into 5 lifecycle stages (Strategy, Design, Transition, Operation, Continual Service Improvement). ITIL 4 replaces this with the Service Value System (SVS) and 34 Practices. The lifecycle model is gone.

The Service Value Chain (SVC) is a new operating model with 6 activities (Plan, Improve, Engage, Design and Transition, Obtain and Build, Deliver and Support) that combine into value streams. This is where ITIL 4 borrows most heavily from Lean and DevOps.

The seven guiding principles (Focus on Value, Start Where You Are, Progress Iteratively With Feedback, Collaborate and Promote Visibility, Think and Work Holistically, Keep It Simple and Practical, Optimise and Automate) are new and appear on every ITIL 4 exam.

Most v3 processes map directly to ITIL 4 practices with expanded scope. A few merged; a few were renamed.

• Incident Management -> Incident Management (unchanged in name, expanded to include swarming and DevOps handoffs).
• Problem Management -> Problem Management (unchanged, added focus on error control and known error database as living artifact).
• Change Management -> Change Enablement (renamed; simplified with Standard, Normal, Emergency categories staying the same).
• Service Level Management -> Service Level Management (unchanged but tied to experience metrics).
• Availability + Capacity + IT Service Continuity -> Service Continuity Management + Capacity and Performance Management + Availability Management (kept as 3 but reweighted).
• Request Fulfilment -> Service Request Management.
• Access Management -> subsumed into Information Security Management + Identity and Access practice.
• Event Management -> Monitoring and Event Management.
• Knowledge Management -> Knowledge Management (elevated importance, tied to Service Configuration Management).
• Service Catalogue Management -> Service Catalogue Management.

ITIL 4 introduces four dimensions that must be considered for every product or service: Organizations and People, Information and Technology, Partners and Suppliers, and Value Streams and Processes. This is a deliberate move away from tech-first thinking and appears in almost every ITIL 4 Foundation and MP exam question.

ITIL v3 to ITIL 4 credit transfer ended in 2022. If you hold ITIL v3 Foundation only, you must take ITIL 4 Foundation to move into the ITIL 4 stack. If you hold ITIL Expert v3, you were eligible for direct entry to Managing Professional Transition module (also retired in 2022).

In 2026, everyone starts ITIL 4 with Foundation. From there, three paths:

• Managing Professional (MP): 4 modules (CDS, DSV, DPI, HVIT). Best for service managers.
• Practitioner modules: single-practice depth. Best for specialists.
• Strategic Leader (SL): DPI + DITS. Best for senior leaders.

Your ITIL v3 certificate does not expire and remains listed on your CV forever. In practical terms, employers increasingly filter for ITIL 4 in shortlist criteria, especially in EMEA and APAC. Update if any apply:

• Your target role JDs specify ITIL 4.
• You are a service manager wanting the MP designation.
• You consult or teach ITSM.
• Your organisation is running or planning an ITIL 4 or SVC-based operating model.

ITIL 4 Foundation: 20 to 30 study hours for a v3 holder, exam 375 USD, accredited training 400 to 900 USD.

ITIL 4 MP full path (CDS, DSV, DPI, HVIT): 120 to 180 study hours, exams roughly 2,000 USD, accredited training bundles 3,500 to 6,000 USD, 6 to 9 month timeline.

Practitioner single module (e.g. Incident Management Practitioner): 20 to 30 study hours, exam 200 to 400 USD, training 500 to 1,200 USD.
