• ITIL 4 Strategist: Direct, Plan and Improve - governance, strategic risk, portfolio planning, organisational change management and continual improvement at scale.

There is rarely a wrong answer in the ordinary sense. Three of the four options usually describe something a competent leader might do. Only one is the best move given the stated constraints, time horizon and risk appetite.

The vocabulary is broader than classic service management. Two modules, two exams, one designation. Direct, Plan and Improve is shared with Managing Professional, so if you already hold it you only need Digital and IT Strategy.

If you already hold Direct, Plan and Improve from the Managing Professional path, take Digital and IT Strategy and you are done.

If you hold neither, start with Direct, Plan and Improve. It establishes the governance and improvement vocabulary that Digital and IT Strategy then assumes, and it is the more forgiving of the two papers.

If your role is already strategy facing, for example you own the IT strategy document or sit on a transformation board, Digital and IT Strategy first is a reasonable choice because the scenarios will read like your working week.

Two full days out of a director level diary is harder to arrange than the study itself. Self-paced e-learning removes the scheduling problem: start the minute you enrol, study in the gaps, and book the exam when the quarter allows.
