In 2024 pgvector was a toy. In 2026, with HNSW indexes, half precision vectors and quantisation, it comfortably handles 10 million 1536-dim embeddings on a single db.r6g.xlarge with p95 latency under 60 ms. You keep transactional joins with your business tables, one backup story, one access control model, and zero new vendors to procure.

Move off pgvector only when you hit one of three real ceilings: more than 10 to 20 million vectors, sustained QPS above ~500, or a genuine need for advanced hybrid ranking that Postgres full-text-search cannot express.

Pinecone Serverless is the right choice when your traffic is spiky, you want zero ops, and you can accept vendor lock-in and per-query pricing that gets expensive above 20 million queries per month.

At 5 million 1536-dim vectors and 100 QPS, real total cost of ownership in 2026 is roughly: pgvector USD 250 to 400/month (existing Postgres), Qdrant Cloud USD 350 to 600, Weaviate Cloud USD 400 to 700, Pinecone Serverless USD 500 to 900 depending on query volume, Zilliz Cloud USD 700 to 1,100. Add one platform engineer's time to self-host anything except pgvector and the managed options often win on TCO under 50 million vectors.

Do not forget embedding cost. At OpenAI text-embedding-3-small pricing, embedding 10 million 500-token chunks costs about USD 100 one-off, but re-embedding on a model change costs the same again. Budget for at least one re-embed per year.
