SQL for Data Science in 2026: What to Actually Learn (and What to Skip)

The single biggest mistake in SQL prep is treating a 900 page reference as a curriculum. A working data scientist uses roughly 25 constructs every week and reaches for the manual for the rest. Learn these deeply: SELECT with column expressions, WHERE with comparison and BETWEEN and IN, LIKE and ILIKE for text, INNER JOIN, LEFT JOIN, FULL OUTER JOIN, CROSS JOIN, UNION and UNION ALL, GROUP BY, HAVING, COUNT DISTINCT, string aggregation (STRING_AGG or LISTAGG), CASE expressions, COALESCE and NULLIF, date arithmetic and truncation, CTEs (WITH clauses), scalar and correlated subqueries, EXISTS and NOT EXISTS, window functions (ROW_NUMBER, RANK, DENSE_RANK, LAG, LEAD, SUM OVER PARTITION BY), QUALIFY (Snowflake, BigQuery), and PIVOT and UNPIVOT for wide to long reshaping.

Window functions are the single highest ROI topic. They separate an intermediate analyst from a data scientist because they let you compute running totals, rolling averages, rank within group, first and last value per session and period over period deltas without leaving SQL. Interviewers know this and 70 percent of hard SQL rounds in 2026 lean heavily on window logic.

Build fluency by rewriting three common problems: (1) top N customers per region by revenue using RANK and QUALIFY, (2) 7 day rolling active users using SUM OVER with a range clause, (3) first purchase per user using ROW_NUMBER partitioned by user id ordered by timestamp. Once these feel automatic you are interview ready for most product analytics roles.

Dialect wars waste time. Pick PostgreSQL if you are a generalist (it is the most portable and has the largest open source ecosystem). Pick BigQuery if you target ad tech, marketing analytics or Google Cloud shops. Pick Snowflake if you are targeting a modern data stack role in mid market SaaS. Once you know one dialect deeply, the other two take a weekend to bridge because 90 percent of the syntax overlaps.

Learn your chosen engine's EXPLAIN plan. Understanding whether a JOIN is a hash join or nested loop, and whether a filter pushes down, is what makes queries fast at scale.

Unless you plan to become a database administrator or data engineer, skip stored procedures, cursors, triggers, table partitioning administration, replication topology, and vendor specific security. Data scientists write analytical SQL, not transactional SQL. Also skip ORMs at first; hand written SQL is a better teacher.

Practice on messy real data (Kaggle Meta Kaggle, Google BigQuery public datasets, NYC taxi, GitHub Archive) not clean textbook tables. Real data has NULLs, duplicates and inconsistent types, which is where genuine skill develops.

A common trap is treating SQL as a one time skill you learn and finish. In practice you get stronger by writing SQL against unfamiliar schemas every week. Set a habit: pick one new public dataset each month, ask five business questions of it, and write the SQL to answer them. Six months of this and you will out perform most bootcamp graduates in interviews because your fluency is repertoire based, not memorisation based. Save your queries in a personal git repo; it doubles as portfolio evidence you can share in interviews.

The bigger point across all of this: the certification, the tool and the method are only ever the ticket. What sustains a career is the daily habit of applying what you learned, sharing the reasoning with colleagues, and quietly building a portfolio of small wins that a future interviewer can point to and believe. Aim for one deliberate practice moment per week, log it in a shared document, and revisit the log every quarter. In twelve months you will have both the credential and the story to explain what it actually changed about how you work.
