PSM II Study Guide 2026: How to Move From Facilitator to Advanced Scrum Master and Pass on First Attempt

PSM I proves you know the Scrum Guide. PSM II proves you can apply Scrum in real, imperfect organisations - the kind where the Product Owner is absent, the team is 12 people, the manager wants status reports, and the Sprint Goal keeps changing. PSM III proves you can coach at scale and defend your decisions in writing with an essay format.

The step from PSM I to PSM II is bigger than the step from PSM II to PSM III in terms of mindset shift. PSM I candidates often assume they can pass PSM II with the same Scrum Guide study; the community pass rate data (50 to 55 percent) says otherwise.

Scrum.org publishes six focus areas that PSM II questions rotate through. Master all six or you leave 15 percent of the exam to luck.

• Understanding and applying Scrum: judgement calls where the Scrum Guide is silent or ambiguous.
• Developing People and Teams: coaching stances (teach, mentor, facilitate, coach), Tuckman stages, psychological safety.
• Managing Products with Agility: product goal, roadmap discovery, evidence based management (EBM).
• Developing and Delivering Products Professionally: DoD evolution, technical debt, release strategies.
• Evolving the Agile Organisation: change agent role, stakeholder management, org design tensions.
• Continuous Planning and Empiricism: forecasting without commitments, dealing with pressure to give dates.

Assumes you already hold PSM I. If not, do PSM I first - the 200 USD extra is cheap insurance.

• Week 1: Re-read the Scrum Guide 2020 (30 minutes) plus the Kanban Guide for Scrum Teams. Take the PSM I Open, PSPO Open, and Scrum Open assessments to 100 percent.
• Week 2: Read the Evidence Based Management Guide and the Nexus Guide. Note that PSM II leans on both.
• Week 3: Deep dive on coaching stances. Read Lyssa Adkins Coaching Agile Teams chapters 4 to 8.
• Week 4: Work through 20 real scenarios (Scrum.org blog, Age of Product, InfoQ). For each, write your answer BEFORE reading the expert commentary.
• Week 5: Take the PSM II Open assessment (free) 3 times. Score 100 percent each time before continuing.
• Week 6: Two full length simulators (Mikhail Lapshin free simulator is closest to the real thing). Book PSM II for end of week.

PSM II questions repeatedly test whether you know which stance to use when. The four core stances: Teach (explain the rule), Mentor (share your experience), Facilitate (guide the group to their own answer), Coach (help them discover their own insight through questions).

Rule of thumb from experienced Scrum coaches: default to facilitate unless the team explicitly asks for teach or mentor. Coach is for individuals with self awareness gaps, not for teaching the framework. Getting this wrong on 3 to 4 questions is enough to fail.

PSM II scenarios often have no textbook right answer. The exam wants you to pick the option that best serves Scrum values (commitment, focus, openness, respect, courage) AND empiricism. When two answers look valid, ask which one preserves the Product Owner's authority over the Product Backlog, which one increases team self-management, and which one keeps the Sprint Goal intact.

Reject options that move accountability away from the team (assigning tasks, promising dates, bypassing the Product Owner). Reject options that solve a symptom without inspecting the underlying cause.
