AWS Solutions Architect Associate (SAA-C03) Study Plan 2026: 8-Week Cadence, Domain Weightings and Lab Priorities

SAA-C03 is 65 questions, 130 minutes, scored 100 to 1000 with a 720 pass line. Question types are multiple choice and multiple response, all scenario based. AWS structures questions around four domains: Design Secure Architectures (30 percent), Design Resilient Architectures (26 percent), Design High Performing Architectures (24 percent), and Design Cost Optimised Architectures (20 percent).

Every question describes a business scenario and asks which architecture MEETS the requirements MOST cost effectively, MOST securely, or with LEAST operational overhead. The qualifier word is the whole game. Two options are often technically correct; only one aligns with the stated qualifier.

This plan assumes zero AWS experience is not the starting point. If you are brand new to cloud, add 2 weeks up front for AWS Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) foundations before starting SAA-C03 prep.

• Week 1: IAM, S3, EC2 basics. Lab: build a static website on S3 with CloudFront and Origin Access Control.
• Week 2: VPC deep dive (subnets, route tables, NAT, VPC endpoints, Transit Gateway). Lab: build a 3-tier VPC with public, private and database subnets across 2 AZs.
• Week 3: RDS, DynamoDB, Aurora, ElastiCache. Lab: deploy Aurora Serverless v2 with read replicas.
• Week 4: Resilience patterns (Auto Scaling, ELB variants, Route 53 routing policies, multi-region strategies). Lab: build an active-passive DR setup with Route 53 health checks.
• Week 5: Security services (KMS, Secrets Manager, WAF, Shield, GuardDuty, Security Hub). Lab: encrypt an S3 bucket with SSE-KMS and cross-account access.
• Week 6: Serverless (Lambda, API Gateway, SQS, SNS, EventBridge, Step Functions). Lab: build an event driven pipeline with SQS + Lambda + DynamoDB.
• Week 7: First 2 full length practice exams. Debrief every wrong answer against the AWS whitepaper it maps to.
• Week 8: Final 2 practice exams, targeted revision on weakest domain, book real exam for end of week.

You will not pass SAA-C03 from watching videos alone. Hands-on labs cement the service quirks the exam tests. Prioritise these six: 3-tier VPC with proper NACLs and security groups, S3 with lifecycle policies and cross-region replication, RDS Multi-AZ vs Read Replica trade-offs (build both and compare), Auto Scaling with target tracking policies, cross-account IAM roles with STS AssumeRole, and a serverless event pipeline.

Use AWS Free Tier where possible and tear down resources within 24 hours. Set an AWS Budgets alert at 5 USD to catch runaway costs (a common trap is forgetting a NAT Gateway which bills at 45 USD per month).

Do 4 full length 65-question practice exams in the last 2 weeks. Space them 3 days apart to allow proper debriefs. Target 80 percent on the last two before booking the real exam. If you are stuck at 65 to 70 percent, the gap is almost always scenario reading speed, not knowledge - practice the two pass approach on timed sets.

Tutorials Dojo, Whizlabs and the official AWS practice questions on Skill Builder are the three trusted sources. Avoid brain dump sites; the SAA-C03 pool rotates and the questions are outdated.

Learn to spot these qualifiers: MOST COST EFFECTIVE (Spot instances, S3 Intelligent-Tiering, Aurora Serverless), LEAST OPERATIONAL OVERHEAD (managed services over self-managed EC2, Fargate over EC2, Lambda over containers when possible), MOST SECURE (KMS with customer managed keys, private subnets, VPC endpoints instead of public internet), HIGHEST AVAILABILITY (Multi-AZ, multi-region for RTO under 15 minutes).

Top failure patterns: skipping VPC networking depth (VPC accounts for roughly 15 percent of questions across domains), memorising services without understanding when NOT to use them, and treating multiple response questions as single-answer (they explicitly say Select TWO or Select THREE).
